PSP

PSP is a portable, handheld gaming device designed and released by Sony Computer Entertainment Corporation. PlayStation Portable which is commonly known as PSP was announced in the year 2003 but was officially released only in the year 2004. It contains a built in screen for displaying the game play, buttons for controls and built in speakers for game sounds. It is a stand alone gaming device which can be taken anywhere. This is indeed a great leap in gaming industry, where games were typically confined to PCs and televisions. Different releases of PSP have different names such as PSP-1000, PSP-2000, PSP-3000, PSP- Go etc.

The PSP is the first handheld gaming device which supports the optical disc format for games. Universal Media Disc commonly abbreviated as UMD was developed by the same company for the use of the PlayStation Portable. The capacity of the UMD is about 1.8 giga bytes. Also this UMD is the first optical disc format for handheld gaming devices. The other distinctive features of the PSP include a large display screen, enhanced multimedia facilities and the internet connectivity. Another important feature of PSP is that it can also be connected to other display devices such as television sets.

This device has a 4.3 inch LCD screen which can display about 16 million colors. Either side of the display has the control keys such as start, select etc. In addition to read-only UMD support for games, it also has the capability to play games from the memory cards. Multiplayer gaming is also featured in PSP which is supported by the Wi-Fi connectivity. The PSP also has the capability to play videos, music and view images seamlessly. The latest releases also present Anti-reflection functionality for the screen which remarkably enhances the gaming experience in brighter environments.

There are some games particularly designed to be played on the PSP console. This console also has the TV-out port which allows enjoying the games in the Television sets using the AV cable. The built in microphone helps the user in Chat applications. It has a 333 MHz CPU with a dedicated GPU with 2 mega bytes video RAM. They create stunning visuals and a breathtaking gaming experience. The PSP is now available in 11 colors. The speakers of the PSP produce stereo sound. So in all aspects PSP excels as one game console that provides an engaging gaming experience for the users.
